Valorant Agents for Beginners: Where to Start

29 Valorant agents by role: who is unlocked from the start, how to get a new one free in 28 days or for Kingdom Credits, and who to start with in each role.
As of August 2026 Valorant has 29 agents, and a newcomer starts with five. Your first agent matters more than it seems: some characters forgive mistakes and teach positioning, others demand memorised lineups and timings without which you will be a burden to the team. Below: who is available immediately, how the rest unlock in 2026 (the recruitment event, Kingdom Credits), what each role does and who to start with in each. No "meta" tier lists: only what Riot confirms and what the ability descriptions say.
Roles: what the team expects from you
Every agent belongs to one of four roles, and in ranked a team without a controller has almost always lost the pick phase already.
- Duelist: a self-sufficient fragger who enters the site first and seeks out fights. The team expects kills and opened rounds.
- Initiator: intel and entry setup: flashes, scans, flushing defenders off positions so the duelist does not go in blind.
- Controller: smokes and zone control: cuts sightlines, splits the map, and without one the attack goes in exposed.
- Sentinel: defence and flanks: traps, turrets, walls; holds the site on defence and watches the back on attack.
The 2026 split: 8 duelists, 7 each of initiators, controllers and sentinels. The latest agent is Miks, the seventh controller, added in patch 12.05 on 18 March 2026; no new agent has been released since.
Who is unlocked and how to get the rest
A new account starts with five agents: Brimstone, Jett, Phoenix, Sage and Sova: the basic training in the Range is built around them. The rest unlock in two ways:
- Agent Recruitment Event. For 28 days after release every new agent is free for in-game experience: earn XP in any mode and the agent is yours. Riot describes the amount as "roughly what tier 5 of the old contract took"; at Waylay's release it was about 200,000 XP.
- Kingdom Credits. Once the event ends, the agent is bought with the in-game currency Kingdom Credits, 8,000 KC as of the latest releases. Credits drop in every mode except Deathmatch (with a bonus for won rounds), cap at 10,000 and cannot be bought for real money.
The system arrived in patch 7.0 together with Agent Gear: instead of the old contracts each agent has ten tiers of cosmetics, also bought with Kingdom Credits, but only after the agent is unlocked. Practical advice: do not spend KC on cosmetics in the first weeks, save for agents. Credits come fastest in Swiftplay: short matches, daily missions and rounds in your favour.
Who to start with in each role
One criterion: abilities work "on click" without memorised lineups, and the agent helps you survive mistakes in duels.
| Agent | Role | Abilities (C / Q / E / X) | Why for a start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brimstone | Controller | Stim Beacon / Incendiary / Sky Smoke / Orbital Strike | Smokes are placed on the map from above, no throw spots to learn. Unlocked from the start |
| Sage | Sentinel | Barrier Orb / Slow Orb / Healing Orb / Resurrection | Healing and the wall forgive the whole team's mistakes; the ult brings a teammate back. Unlocked from the start |
| Sova | Initiator | Owl Drone / Shock Bolt / Recon Bolt / Hunter's Fury | Drone and recon dart teach information gathering; lineups can come gradually. Unlocked from the start |
| Phoenix | Duelist | Blaze / Hot Hands / Curveball / Run it Back | His own flash and heal, the ult gives a second life on entry. Unlocked from the start |
| Reyna | Duelist | Leer / Devour / Dismiss / Empress | Heals and goes intangible after a kill, teaches aggression without paying for trades |
| Killjoy | Sentinel | Nanoswarm / Alarmbot / Turret / Lockdown | The turret and bot hold the flank for you while you learn positions |
| Cypher | Sentinel | Trapwire / Cyber Cage / Spycam / Neural Theft | Camera and tripwires give intel at no risk; teaches map reading |
| KAY/O | Initiator | FRAG/ment / FLASH/drive / ZERO/point / NULL/cmd | A flash without precision throws, the knife suppresses enemy abilities on site |
| Gekko | Initiator | Mosh Pit / Wingman / Dizzy / Thrash | Creatures come back after use, you can make mistakes and try again |
| Clove | Controller | Pick-me-up / Meddle / Ruse / Not Dead Yet | Smokes even after death, the ult self-resurrects, the most forgiving controller |
| Omen | Controller | Shrouded Step / Paranoia / Dark Cover / From the Shadows | Smokes like Brimstone's but with a teleport; the next step after him |
Purchase order if the starting five is not enough: first Killjoy or Cypher (a sentinel fills the most common hole in solo queue), then Reyna to train aim and KAY/O as a universal initiator. Leave Jett from the starter set for later: her dashes and ult need confident aim, otherwise she is just a quick way to hand over a round.
Who to skip for now
Viper, Astra and Harbor are controllers with round-long planning and lineups; Yoru and Neon are duelists that do not work without timing and aim; Chamber and Vyse require map understanding; Fade and Breach are initiators whose abilities must be thrown from memorised spots. All great agents, just not for the first fifty hours.
Where to learn: modes and maps
- The Range (Practice): basic training on Brimstone, Jett, Sova and Sage, shooting drills against bots, a separate mode for planting and defusing the spike.
- Swiftplay: first to 5 round wins instead of 13, full economy, no rating. The main mode for learning agents and farming Kingdom Credits.
- Unrated: the full first-to-13 format with no rating at stake; Riot recommends it and Swiftplay to beginners instead of ranked.
- Deathmatch: 12 players, first to 40 kills or 9 minutes, no abilities; aim warm-up.
- Spike Rush: a short mode to 4 wins, every attacker carries a spike, power-up orbs.
- Competitive: unlocks at account level 20; how ranked works is in the ranks guide.
The competitive pool at the end of August 2026 is seven maps: Ascent, Haven, Lotus, Split, Summit, Sunset and Abyss; Breeze left the rotation in patch 13.04, Fracture and Pearl in patch 13.00. Learn smoke spots and positions on those: maps outside the pool never show up in ranked.
Before your first ranked game
The agent is not the only thing that decides results. Check your FPS and network, pick a sensitivity: if you came from CS2, the sensitivity transfer guide helps, and reference points for eDPI and crosshairs are in the pro player database, it shows the DPI, sensitivity and crosshairs of 651 professionals. Tune a crosshair to your taste in the crosshair generator.
