Esports World Cup 2026 CS2: Groups, Schedule and Prize Pool

The Esports World Cup 2026 has kicked off in Paris, the richest CS2 event of the summer: 32 teams, $2,000,000 on the line, and a grand final at Accor Arena, the same venue that hosted the 2023 Major. Day one of the group stage delivered an upset nobody had on their card: JiJieHao, who came through the open qualifier, beat Spirit.

Format: 32 teams, four groups

The teams are split into four groups of eight. Each group runs double elimination: opening matches are best-of-one, everything after that is best-of-three. Four teams advance from every group, sixteen in total. The playoffs are a single-elimination bracket, best-of-three throughout, with a best-of-five grand final.

The group stage runs from August 12 to 16, the playoffs from August 19 to 23. Most of the event takes place at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, with the August 23 final moving to Accor Arena.

The groups

Seeding was based on July's Valve Regional Standings. Most teams were invited directly; four more (BIG, K27, JiJieHao and 100 Thieves) came through the open qualifier. HLTV called Group C the toughest of the four: Vitality and MOUZ share it with B8, PARIVISION and TYLOO.

Prize pool

The tournament MVP takes home a separate $25,000. On top of that come Club Championship points, the Esports World Cup's cross-discipline standings: 1,000 points for winning the CS2 event, 750 for second place, 500 for third.

Day one: Spirit fall, GamerLegion roll

Sixteen best-of-one matches were played on August 12, the format where a favorite can go down in a single evening. And one did. JiJieHao beat Spirit 13-10 on Mirage, carried by sinnopsyy (17 kills, 95 damage per round) and m1N1 with a 2v4 clutch. donk put up 23 kills at a 1.58 rating in the loss, while sh1ro had a night to forget: 0.52, including a death to his own molotov.

"We just beat the world number one so I don't know what to say anymore," sinnopsyy told HLTV after the match.

Spirit are technically ranked second by HLTV, but for a team fresh off a lost BLAST Bounty final, this was a painful start. Elsewhere on day one, BIG beat Aurora 13-9 on Cache and GamerLegion crushed Luminosity 13-3 on Nuke. Double elimination gives everyone a second life. The road through the lower bracket is just longer.

Favorites and storylines

By HLTV's ranking, the strongest sides here are Falcons, Spirit, FURIA, Vitality and MOUZ. Each arrives with a question: Vitality are answering for their Cologne Major run, Falcons are still hunting consistency, Spirit are recovering from Malta, and Natus Vincere are back after nearly two months without official matches. FURIA and 9z get to prove their summer surge is real.

The defending champions are The MongolZ, who swept Aurora 3-0 in the 2025 final. This year the Mongolians landed in Group D alongside NAVI, FURIA and 9z.
