CS2 Update: Rush Mode and Silent Reloads

Silent reloads, a soundless un-scope, the 3v3 Rush mode, picks instead of bans in Premier, and crosshairs that no longer depend on your resolution.

The update of September 22, 2026 breaks the usual pattern. Valve left weapon numbers alone and went after things every round touches instead: silent reloads, a soundless un-scope, a new way of picking maps in Premier, a 3v3 mode called Rush, and crosshairs that no longer depend on your resolution. Here is what each of those does to your games. If you came to check what the update today actually contains, the full log is below, and earlier update news sits in our patch feed.

Silent reloads and a quiet un-scope

You can now reload without making a sound by pressing and holding the reload key. The price is the animation: a silent reload takes considerably longer, so the trick only works when you have the time to spare.

The second change lives in the same area. Un-scoping a sniper rifle no longer produces a sound at all. The click used to give away an AWPer who changed their mind about an angle, and now it does not.

Both edits chip at the same habit: listening for what the enemy is doing. The audio picture of a round is thinner than it was, and information people used to get by ear now has to come from somewhere else.

Premier map selection: bans are gone

The whole pick process was rebuilt. Instead of striking maps down to one, teams now pick: the first team names one map, the second names two, the first adds a fourth. One of those four is then selected at random and the match starts.

Valve's reasoning is plain. A team that invested time into a map should get a chance to play it rather than watch it disappear to a ban. The flip side is randomness: you can no longer prepare for one specific map, you prepare for any of the four.

Rush: a 3v3 mode

Rush is a fast queued mode, three against three. Teams move through a gauntlet of battle arenas, randomly selected for every match, trying to reach the opponent's castle. A round goes to whoever wipes the other team or holds the tower when time runs out.

Budget and time are deliberately tight, because the mode is built to be short. Wins feed a separate friends leaderboard, so the competition on offer is with your contact list rather than the world.

Crosshairs: resolution independent at last

One of the most useful changes in the patch, and one of the least discussed. Crosshairs are now resolution independent: the same code renders identically whatever aspect ratio you play on. Stretched 4:3 used to make the lines look thicker, and players re-tuned the thickness by eye after switching.

The settings menu also gained a dedicated Crosshair and Scopes tab, new styles arrived, and the default crosshair is now Dynamic Quad, which Valve says represents weapon accuracy better. Ready-made pro codes you can paste into your own client sit in our crosshair gallery.

Everything else in the patch

  • Blood and bullet impacts read better now: Valve raised the clarity of impact decals across the game;
  • Clan tags are back, pulled from your Steam group and shown next to your name;
  • Stickers can be applied to the C4;
  • ammo_grenade_limit_total now also caps how many grenades a player may buy in a round;
  • chickens take damage from the Zeus x27, which is a genuine line from the official notes;
  • a new music kit, Starjunk 95, in standard and StatTrak versions;
  • music volume can be set per game mode;
  • the engine moved to the latest version of Source 2.

The chicken eggs that are not in the patch notes

Within hours of the update, players started finding a chicken egg among their weekly drops. The official notes say nothing about it. Valve never announced this mechanic at all, and everything known about it comes from players and from datamined files.

By those accounts the egg turns into a pet over time: a chick first, then a growing bird, then a full chicken. The pet needs feeding or it leaves, and there is a separate album for photos of it. None of this touches gameplay, and going by the same findings the egg cannot be sold or traded.

Treat it as unconfirmed. While Valve stays quiet, this is a reconstruction from game files, and such reconstructions disagree with each other regularly. The number of chicken variants, for instance, is quoted as anything from 34 to 36 depending on which write-up you read.

The one official line about chickens in this patch is far more mundane: they now take damage from the Zeus x27. Valve drew no connection to the eggs, so the coincidence stays a coincidence.

Map fixes

No reworks, just holes plugged: Ancient lost the gaps in Long A Main Hall and got door geometry fixed inside Jaguar, Cache had gaps cleaned around the blue doors in Mid, Mirage got the scaffolding by the A site balcony reinforced, and Train had a pixel gap in the bombsite A crates blocked off.

Frequently asked questions

Is the silent reload some kind of exploit?

No, it is a built-in mechanic: press and hold the reload key. The animation runs noticeably longer in exchange, so the silence is never free.

Can I still ban a map in Premier?

No, bans are gone from the process entirely. Teams pick four maps between them and one is launched at random, so any of the four can come up.

Do I need to redo my crosshair after the patch?

If you played stretched 4:3 and tuned the thickness by eye, it is worth checking. The crosshair now draws the same at any resolution, so the old correction may no longer be needed.
