CS2 Patch: Demo Chat Encrypted, Cache Fixes

The September 9 CS2 update encrypts team chat in demo files, seals gaps on Cache, removes a B site wallbang and adds missing spawn points.

The CS2 update from September 9 shipped quietly, with no announcement, but one change breaks a long standing habit: chat in demo files is now encrypted. Team conversations can no longer be pulled out of a match recording. Cache also got a round of fixes, and mappers received new tooling.

Demo chat is no longer readable

Valve restored the CS:GO rules: team chat inside a demo file is encrypted and does not show up at all during playback. Global chat stays readable, but only through the in-game watch UI. A third party parser reading the file will not get it.

What that means in practice:

  • external demo viewers and parsers no longer surface team chat;
  • you cannot extract the opposing team's messages from a downloaded recording;
  • inside the game, watching a demo normally still shows global chat as before.

Previously the full demo chat log of both teams could be dumped from the file, which analysts and drama hunters alike relied on. That channel is closed now.

Voice chat is untouched by the patch. It was never written into the demo file, so hearing team comms from a recording was impossible before this update too.

How to watch demos after the update

The routine has not changed. Download the recording from your match history in the client, then use Watch and Download and play it through the built in viewer. That path is what keeps global chat visible; opening the file in external software now yields less data.

If a demo refuses to download or the viewer complains about the file, the patch is usually not to blame. It is more often a corrupted download or a connection problem, which we covered in the guide on how to fix packet loss in CS2.

Cache fixes

The map received four targeted corrections:

  • various gaps in the geometry were sealed;
  • a wallbang spot on B site was removed;
  • a missing competitive CT spawn point was added;
  • additional T spawn points were added.

That missing CT spawn is exactly the kind of detail that left a team starting a round with positions out of shape. Cache returned to the active pool recently and Valve keeps polishing it: our breakdown of the map's return covers the background, and the Cache guide covers how to play it.

Tooling for mappers

Most of the patch went into map scripting and does not touch regular players. In short: the CSPlayerCamera entity is renamed to CustomPlayerCamera and gains GetPlayer, GetMode, SetMode and SetFollowConfig, while three older methods are deprecated.

custom_hud_layout gained an observable property that decides whether an observer sees the UI the way the spectated player does. It defaults to false. Valve also fixed stale HUD state when switching spectator targets and added classes that react to the buy menu and scoreboard being open.

Worth knowing

The update landed on September 9 and was the first since August 24. Gaps that long are rare for CS2. Patch notes went out as usual, without a separate blog post.

Worth noting that several issues opened on the official bug tracker in those days went unaddressed: the fake VAC ban exploit and the complaint that settings and aliases do not save.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is chat missing in my CS2 demo?

Since the September 9 patch, team chat in demos is encrypted and does not display at all. Global chat is still readable, but only through the in-game watch UI rather than external software.

Can you enable voice chat in a CS2 demo?

No. Voice chat is not recorded into the demo file, and the patch did not change that, so team comms cannot be heard from a recording.

What was fixed on Cache?

Gaps in the map geometry were sealed, a wallbang spot on B site was removed, a missing competitive CT spawn was added and terrorists received extra spawn points.

When was the last CS2 update?

September 9, 2026. The previous one shipped on August 24, so the gap ran over two weeks.
