CS2 Shadows: Why 4:3 Shows You Less Than 16:9

At BLAST Open Porto a Lynn Vision player missed an enemy shadow: on 4:3 distant shadows are not drawn, on 16:9 they are. The finding and data from 893 pros.

On 28 August a pair of screenshots went round the CS2 community: the same scene, the same maxed-out graphics settings, the only difference being the aspect ratio, and on 16:9 you can see the shadow of an approaching enemy while on 4:3 it simply is not there. The argument started not in the game files but on the BLAST Open Porto broadcast, where a Lynn Vision player appears to have died because of it. Here is what is actually established, what got embellished along the way, and how many pros really sit on 4:3, according to our settings database.

What happened

On 27 August, in the group-stage match Falcons vs Lynn Vision (Falcons won 2:1: Inferno 13:4, Ancient 10:13, Dust2 13:9), on the deciding map Chinese player Sike "z4KR" Zhang failed to react to an approaching opponent and died. A viewer spotted the detail on stream: the shadow of the incoming Falcons player was visible on the observer feed, but could not have been on z4KR's screen, since he plays on 4:3.

The observation was posted by a Reddit user going by u/crisjame, and it was CS2 insider Thour (@ThourCS2, 102.7k followers) who gave it reach: on 28 August he published a side-by-side of shadow rendering on 4:3 and 16:9 at identical maximum settings. The post spread quickly through the community.

A day later Dust2.us retold the story under the headline "Dataminer discovers using a 16:9 aspect ratio gives an advantage in CS2".

An important correction: this is not a datamine

The original headline is misleading, and that is worth stating plainly. Nobody dug through game files or uncovered hidden variables: this is a visual observation from broadcast footage, later reproduced in screenshots. Neither Thour's post nor the Dust2.us piece names the patch that changed shadow behaviour, and neither offers a technical explanation, only the comparison image.

We checked the official CS2 updates for August 2026 (3, 12, 19 and 24 August): none mentions aspect ratio, field of view or shadow rendering. As of 30 August there is no public response from Valve.

Why resolution could affect shadows at all

The mechanic being argued about works like this. Source 2 uses Hor+ scaling: the vertical viewing angle stays the same while the horizontal one widens along with the frame. In plain terms, on 16:9 you see more space to the sides than on 4:3 at identical settings. Valve does not publish exact field-of-view values per aspect ratio, and the numbers circulating on forums contradict each other, so we will not quote degrees.

Hence the plausible theory: the engine derives dynamic shadow draw distance not from absolute metres but from what fits in the frame. An object outside the shadow-drawing zone on 4:3 would then fall inside it on 16:9. To be clear: this is the community's explanation, not Valve's, and there is no documentation of the mechanic in patch notes or technical materials.

What definitely does not change is hitboxes. They are computed server-side from the model's skeleton coordinates and do not depend on the client's resolution. Stretched 4:3 makes an enemy model roughly 1.33 times wider on screen, but it does not make them easier to hit: that is a picture effect, not physics.

How many pros play on 4:3, our numbers

Secondary retellings disagree about which top players sit on native 16:9; different aggregators put different names there. We looked at our own settings database, 893 profiles as of 29 August 2026:

The most common resolution is 1280×960 (62.5% of the whole database), and the overwhelming majority of 4:3 players stretch the image rather than use black bars: 643 against 64. In other words, the finding lands squarely on the setting four fifths of the professional scene plays with.

Native 16:9 is no exotic choice either: on 1920×1080 you will find ropz and mezii from Vitality, magixx and chopper from Spirit, xertioN from MOUZ, siuhy from Liquid, plus jks, Grim and oSee. The full breakdown lives on CS2 in numbers, and individual configs are in the pro player database.

Should you switch resolution

The sober answer: there is no reason yet to break your muscle memory over an effect confirmed neither by Valve nor by measurement. 4:3 persists among professionals not out of stubbornness, stretched models are bigger, and the habit takes years to build. If you do want to test the scene yourself:

  1. Open video settings and switch between 1280×960 and 1920×1080 with identical graphics options.
  2. Set Global Shadow Quality high: shadow draw distance depends on it, and comparing on low settings is pointless.
  3. Check the same distance in a private game with a bot or on an empty server, not from memory.

Frequently asked questions

Does 16:9 really give an advantage in CS2?

In this particular episode a shadow was visible on 16:9 and absent on 4:3. But that is a single viewer observation, not a measured effect: Valve has not commented, and no August 2026 patch shipped such a change.

Does stretched 4:3 affect hitboxes?

No. Hitboxes are calculated by the server from the player model; stretching only changes the picture on your screen, the enemy looks wider, the hit zone is unchanged.

Why do you see more to the sides on 16:9?

Source 2 uses Hor+ scaling: moving to a wider frame preserves the vertical view and widens the horizontal one. Valve does not publish official values in degrees.

How many pros play on 4:3?

In our database as of 29 August 2026, 709 of 893 profiles in the database, or 79.4%. 90 players (10.1%) are on 16:9.
