StarSeries Fall 2026: Teams, Format, Preview

From 17 to 20 September Barcelona hosts StarLadder StarSeries Fall 2026, the twentieth and anniversary season of the oldest tournament series in Counter-Strike. Eight teams, $500,000 in prize money, four days of double elimination, and a move out of Finland that was never in the plan: the tournament was meant to be hosted by an arena in Vaasa. Here is who is coming, what is at stake and why the venue changed.

Why the event left Finland

StarSeries Fall was originally planned for Vaasa, a Finnish city with the several-thousand-seat Vaasan Sähkö arena. In spring 2026 local authorities turned the organisers down after learning that StarLadder admits Russian players: Finland has restricted entry for Russian citizens since 2022. According to HLTV, Barcelona will host the event; the organisers have not publicly described the venue itself.

For the series that is a visible step down. StarSeries has historically run on big stages, and last year's autumn season was hosted by Budapest. The spring 2026 edition was cancelled outright because its dates clashed with the summer Major.

Who is playing

The field is complete: four teams received direct invitations, four came through closed qualifiers across three regions. HLTV world ranking positions are as of 2 September 2026.

Five of the eight participants sit in the world top ten. For an eight-team bracket that is a dense field: almost every match from day one is a top-25 clash, and an elimination bracket leaves no room to warm up.

Format and prize money

There is no group stage: the eight teams go straight into a double-elimination bracket and every series is a best-of-three. A loss in the upper bracket drops you down for a second chance; only the second defeat ends the run. The prize split:

Three storylines

NAVI defend the title

StarSeries Fall 2025 in Budapest was won by Natus Vincere, who beat Ninjas in Pyjamas 2:0 in the final (13:7 on Nuke, 13:10 on Inferno). That trophy ended a drought stretching back to IEM Rio 2024. The team currently sits eighth in the ranking, the only invited side outside the top five, and arrives in Barcelona as the reigning champion of the series.

Three tournaments with barely a break

Half the field comes into StarSeries off a packed calendar. Vitality, NAVI, MOUZ, Aurora and FURIA are finishing BLAST Open Porto, which ends on 6 September. FURIA and MIBR then travel to FISSURE Playground 3 in Suzhou (8–13 September), and a few days after China comes the flight to Spain. Freshness in Barcelona will be a factor of its own, especially for the Brazilians.

Aurora and magic, the dark horses

Aurora had the hardest road through the European qualifier: they dropped maps, went 24 rounds deep against HOTU on Cache in the decider and pulled the series out through XANTARES, Wicadia and Jimpphat. They were the only top-20 team in that qualifier, where Astralis, Ninjas in Pyjamas and 3DMAX all fell short. The second European slot went to magic, while NRG played the American qualifier with new AWPer hallzerk for the first time: they fell to the lower bracket and came back to win the decider.

What else is at stake

The main event of the autumn is the PGL Singapore Major (25 November to 13 December, $1,250,000, 32 teams). Seeding and invitations run off Valve Regional Standings, with the ranking cut-off set for 2 November 2026. StarSeries falls inside that window, so results in Barcelona feed directly into where teams enter the Major race. For NRG, MIBR and magic it is also a chance to close a gap that currently keeps them far from direct invitations.
