Steam Is Ending Physical Gift Cards in 2026

From late 2026, physical Steam cards will disappear from retail stores. 14 years of fighting scammers — and Valve lost. Digital cards remain.

On June 10, 2026, Valve quietly announced that physical Steam gift cards are leaving retail stores forever. Best Buy, Target, Sam's Club, and everywhere else — by end of 2026 the cards disappear from shelves. Another "interesting" Valve decision that hurts honest users more than the scammers it's meant to stop.

What Exactly Is Being Removed

Only physical cards from retail stores. Topping up your Steam Wallet via digital card on the website remains fully available. Already-purchased physical cards are still valid and can be activated with no expiry.

Valve's official explanation:

"As we have continued to put more and more restrictions in place, scammers have adapted. They continue to have an impact on Steam customers and other unsuspecting individuals. So we've made the difficult decision to end the Steam Gift Card program at retail stores."

Short version: 14 years of fighting, more and more restrictions, scammers adapted every time. They gave up — removed them.

How the Scam Worked

Steam cards became an ideal tool for phone fraud: anonymous, transactions irreversible, purchasable at any Walmart. The scheme is simple — a victim gets a call from a "tax agent," "bank security officer," or "Microsoft tech support" and is convinced to urgently buy a Steam card and read out the code.

The elderly were the most common victims. The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) estimates losses from gift card fraud industry-wide at over $100 million per year.

Valve introduced increasingly strict restrictions since 2012: warnings on packaging, retailer and law enforcement cooperation, blocking suspicious regions, limiting top-ups to wallet currency only. Each time, scammers adapted. In the end Valve took the simple route — remove the hammer from the Whack-a-Mole game entirely.

What Remains

Digital cards through store.steampowered.com. In 2025 Valve added Guest Checkout — purchasing without a Steam account — clearly preparing for this transition. So gifting a friend Steam funds is still possible, just exclusively online now.

The problem is different: grandma at the supermarket knew how to buy a physical card — navigating a digital purchase through Steam is another matter. The most innocent way to give someone a game as a birthday present just got harder.

Community Reaction

Divided. Some are disappointed — "I enjoyed getting family to gift me Steam gift cards" — someone wrote they'll practically stop buying from Steam. Others viewed it positively: at least fewer elderly people will be defrauded.

A separate irony noted by PCGamesN: someone seriously suggested that remaining physical cards in stores will become collector's items and rise in value. Already fetching $10 for a "Steam Gift Card — Final 2026 Edition."

The scammers, by the way, aren't going anywhere — they'll just switch to Roblox, Fortnite, and Apple cards. The problem didn't die, it just became someone else's problem. Stay up to date with Steam and CS2 news in the articles section.
